The starfish story, embodied by our starfish lapel pin, is one that can be used for both inspiration & employee motivation. It is a parable demonstrating the power each of us has to make a difference in another person or an organization. It is the story of endurance and perseverance even when it may seem like the chances of success are slim. By taking small steps and making small changes, we can make a difference.

The Starfish Story
While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it back into the ocean.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.
The old man smiled, and said, "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."
Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, "But young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one."

Beautiful
I purchased this to give to my graduating senior social workers to remind them that even on the hardest days in our career, they will make a difference. Even to one person. Especially now with the pandemic, they can still make a difference. We are not together physically in class so I can't wait for them to get them! Mailed them out this morning. Next week will be my church's 13th trip to a El Ayudante mission in Leon, Nicaragua. We stay at the beautiful facilities that the mission offers. Our mission team brings clothing, baseballs, bible stories, arts and crafts and good will to people who live in poor communities. By Wed. evening we're feeling a little sad about the relentless poverty that we see. I read The Starfish Story to the other team members at our evening devotionals. It bolsters everyone's spirits for the rest of the trip. And when we return to our churches, we wear our pins proudly. It's a good reminder that you can't fix everyone's problems, but you can make a difference for a few - and that's not nothing. Perfect Expression of Sentiment
I purchased these for the Sunday School Teaching Staff at church. During a recent meeting and surprise "Appreciation" that I planned, I had framed one for each teacher and had attached engraved name plates that said "Keep Makin A Difference". It was the perfect way to encourage them to strive to reach "at least one" every time they teach and their teaching will not be in vain. I told them the story before giving them each their framed story card. They loved it!!

Heartfelt reminder
We lost our son almost 5 yrs. ago to an overdose. Completely unexpected, and we spent months at his hospital bed while he was in coma. We and our daughter have been in therapy ever since and on anti-depressants. We are slowly growing stronger, and the starfish story and pin is something that I like to give to special people in our lives who have comforted us and who have helped us spread the word about illegal drugs and the increasing epidemic of street drugs, the impact it is having on our young people all over. You may feel like you're fighting a lost battle, but every single person who is impacted by our story is a small victory, just like each single starfish that is thrown back into the sea.
